How to reset an HP Wi-Fi printer?

In this guide, we assume that you have properly wired all devices. Notebook, WLAN router and printer have electricity and, if necessary, are supplied with the right cables. Since there are different ways to wirelessly connect an HP printer to a laptop, we present the three most common variants here. You don't need a lot of technical expertise for any of the methods, so following the steps exactly should definitely lead to the goal. Setup directly at the printer

This is the most complicated, but at the same time the most reliable variant - because it is guaranteed to always work with any HP printer. You don't need "tools"; you only need to know the network name and the password.

• Turn on the printer and go to the control panel. Before doing so, you should also know both the name (also called SSID) of your network and the associated password. If you do not know this data, please ask the person who set up the network.

• Now press the "Setup" button on the printer's control panel (which can also be displayed as a wrench symbol, since this graphic can differ depending on the model) and then go to "Network".

• At this point, the printer should show you all network sources in the vicinity. Pick your network name or, if you can't find it, type it in at the bottom of the list. Pay attention to the use of upper and lower case, otherwise the connection cannot be established.

• After selecting your network, you will be prompted to enter the password. Remember to use an exact spelling here as well. Once this step is complete, the printer should connect to the network, and therefore your laptop, on its own. You can now print without being connected to the printer with a USB cable.

Setup via HP wireless connection

With the so-called HP wireless connection, you can skip the steps involved in entering the network name and password. However, to do this, both the printer and the laptop must be compatible with this technology. The following framework conditions must be met for the HP wireless connection:

  • At least Windows Vista or MacOS X 10.5 is installed on your laptop.

  • The connection between the laptop and the network is wireless.

  • The connection to the WLAN router is made via the 2.4 gigahertz frequency (this should be the case with the vast majority of devices, but the newer 5.0 gigahertz frequency is not compatible with HP printers).

The printer must be in the HP Auto Wireless Connect status. This happens automatically when you first turn on the printer or try to establish a network connection.

If you see the automatic wireless connection after turning on the printer, you should also use this option. However, before you perform the following steps, you should make sure that you are not downloading or doing other important work on the Internet. The connection to the Internet is disconnected once during setup, which prevents access to the Internet during this time.

Once you've made sure you can meet the above criteria, do the following:

  • Install the software that came with your printer on your laptop. Simply follow the instructions that are displayed to you during the installation.

  • You will eventually be prompted to choose a connection type for network setup. From there, select "Network (Ethernet/Wireless)" and then the option to automatically send your wireless settings to the HP printer.

  • That's all you have to do at this point, because the rest is taken care of by the HP software. Settings regarding the network name and password are not required.
